The Southern California sky above Edwards is hallowed ground for pilots: among the clouds is the air in which pilots first broke Mach 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. Later, Edwards was the site where the design of the Space Shuttle was developed and its first approach and landing tests were conducted. It was also the site for testing the B-2 Stealth Bomber. In 1981, the Space Shuttle made its first landing from space at Edwards. The base is still a reserve landing site for all shuttle missions. <p>Edwards is now the location of the Air Force Test Pilot School. Combined Test Forces consists of military and civilian personnel working together to flight-test and evaluate improvements and new systems on modern aircraft. It is also where the Air Force Flight Test Center plans, accomplishes and reports on Air Force development test and evaluation of manned and unmanned aircraft systems; participates in and reports on testing of operational flight-simulator trainers and supports Air Force initial operational tests and evaluation of manned aircraft systems. The 412th Test Wing; AF Test Pilot School; 95th Air Base Wing; and AF Research Lab are the units that call the base home. Those units have 3,678 active-duty members supported by a civilian workforce of 7,412. <p>Base housing consists of 1211 family units and 88 unaccompanied officer units. The exchange on base is medium-size. There is also a mall and a shopette. There are three elementary schools and one secondary school on base. All are run by the Muroc Unified School District. The on-base childcare facility can house 110, but there is a wait. Home care is available. The 95th Medical Group, which has a 25-bed clinic, provides health care, but by appointment only.
