CALIFORNIA CITY — The building boom continues in California City, as
the value of building permits issued by the end of June outstrips the numbers
for 2003 by about $2 million.
According to figures released by City Hall, California City has issued
172 building permits worth a total of $11.79 million as of June 30.
For the same period in 2003, the city had issued 130 permits, worth
$4.45 million. By the end of 2003, the city had issued 235 permits worth
$9.52 million. That’s $2.26 million less than for the first six months
of this year, but still reflects a steady increase in the number of building
projects in the city, both residential and commercial.
Busy June
In June of this year alone, the city issued 24 permits worth $1.7 million,
for projects ranging from new single family homes and home improvements,
to a construction trailer at the Ellison Plaza site.
Major projects for 2004 include Friends Tires, expanding into a new
location at the Aspen Mall; Hyundai test track, a $50 million project expected
to open in the fall with 100 jobs; the Compressed Natural Gas facility,
which will fuel at least one CNG-powered police car and other fleet vehicles;
and small businesses like Cal City Hot Rods and Curves for Women.
Shopping center
Also on the horizon is the Ellison Plaza at California City Boulevard
and California City Boulevard South, where developer Michael Ellison plans
to install a gas station, retail shopping center, and family amusement
center with movie screens, arcade and bowling alley. A hotel and grocery
store are also possible at this location, but Ellison is still negotiating
with possible tenants and is not ready to announce company names.
