CITY — Sculptor Russell Michael, owner of California City Movie Studios,
spent a little more than a month to create this eagle, "Freedom's Flight,"
from stainless steel, copper, and cold rolled steel. Michael said he dedicated
the eagle to the people of the city, and he installed it to face the city
instead of the traffic passing by on California City Boulevard because
that way the eagle is flying toward the city and bringing it prosperity.
The base of the sculpture features a pick and shovel to symbolize that
hard work brings freedom and prosperity. The sculpture was on display for
a month at the Palmdale Playhouse for a play that focused on the meaning
of freedom.
Michael sculpted a similar eagle from copper, bronze, and stainless steel that now stands in the corporate office of Anheuser Busch in Anaheim.
Al Gagnon, California City Real Estate, bought
the sculpture and also dedicated it to the city, emphasizing the "pioneering
spirit of the past, present and future citizens of California City," a
sentiment on the plaque in front of the eagle placed by Gagnon and his
wife, Katy Gagnon. "It's good to contribute something back to the city,"
Al Gagnon said. DEBBY BADILLO/Desert News
