City awarded multiple state grants

CALIFORNIA CITY Despite the troublesome facets of this year's state budget, there is still some money that flows from Sacramento to California City. Tuesday's city council meeting brought out three state grants that will bring money to the city.
First up at this week's council meeting was the police department. They requested approval of a joint power agreement with the California Highway Patrol to help reduce the number of drunk drivers on the highways.
The CHP will provide about $1200 to CCPD to fund overtime. Council members agreed with the concept, but one councilman voted no because no representative of the police department was present to speak on behalf of the project.
Another $5300 in state money was accepted to fund firefighting equipment for local forces. Fire Chief Mike Antonucci briefed council on a grant project that the city fire department had applied for.
Airport projects had appeared doomed during the state budget process, but airport manager Tom Weil fought for them traveling to Sacramento to lobby state senators and assemblymembers. He was successful in his efforts on behalf of CalCity and Mojave airports. (See related story nearby.) A third state grant $558,000 will allow Weil to upgrade the airport's parking ramp to federal specifications. The current ramp consists of three inches of asphalt laid over dirt. The parking ramp project is the first phase of a two-part project and included in $1.1 million in airport improvements.
In other business city council approved an agreement to totally renovate Redwood Boulevard between Hacienda and Neuralia. The project, estimated at about $170,000.
Beginning with their next meeting, August 19, city council will meet
monthly on the third Tuesday of each month.
