Building permits up significantly in California City
Action planned on two hotels
BY BILL DEAVER
CALIFORNIA CITY - Permits for building new homes in California City are up significantly over last year, City Manager Jack Stewart said Monday.
"We've had ten building permits for new homes pulled in the first six weeks of this year compared to nine for all of last year," Stewart said.
Hotel action
There's also a possibility that the old Lakeshore Inn hotel may be sold, Stewart said. An auction will be held in Bakersfield Saturday on the property.
"There's a group from out-of-town that's interested in coming in and acquiring it and doing something with it - we should know the details after the auction," Stewart said.
The four story hotel was originally built as a Holiday Inn in the city's early days. It was used primarily to house people who were attracted to the new land development on weekends and transported by trains, planes, and buses. The visitors were put up in the hotel where they attended sales presentations and were given tours of the new community.
Over the years the hotel lost its Holiday Inn franchise and went through a series of ownerships. After it closed its doors for the last time it fell into disrepair, leading city officials to ask that it either be rehabilitated or demolished.
The latest owner, Orris Forrest of Boulder City, Nevada, had reacquired title to the property when he passed away at age 86, according to Stewart. Forrest's estate is putting the property up for the Saturday auction.
Inn at Tierra del Sol
On the proposed Inn at Tierra del Sol, Stewart said the city is getting ready to issue a grading permit for the site and is waiting for final drawings to come in so construction can begin. That hotel will be located on California City Boulevard near the Tierra del Sol golf course.
