Mojave chamber to hear report on 'Main Street' program

Program aims to aid local businesses

SPECIAL TO THE DESERT NEWS

MOJAVE - Tehachapi resident Dr. Adrian Moore will brief the Mojave Chamber of Commerce on that city's "Main Street" program to boost business, at the chamber's monthly meeting noon January 22, at the Mariah Country Inn.

Since 1980, the National Main Street Center has been working with communities across the nation to revitalize their historic or traditional commercial areas. Based in historic preservation, the Main Street approach was developed to save historic commercial architecture and has become a powerful economic development tool as well.

The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of a community's downtown or central business district. Improving economic management, strengthening public participation, and making downtown a fun place to visit are as critical to Main Street's future as recruiting new businesses, rehabilitating buildings, and expanding parking.

Locally-driven

The locally-driven program builds on a downtown's inherent assets - architecture, personal service, and traditional values and most of all, a sense of place. In cities around the U.S., the Main Street approach has rekindled entrepreneurship, downtown cooperation and civic concern.

Moore is vice-president for research of the Reason Foundation, and has directed Reason's privatization research since 1996.

Mojave Chamber of Commerce meetings are open to the public. A no-host lunch is served beginning at 11:45 a.m. and the meeting begins at noon. For more information call 661.824.8417.
