California City Planning Commission approves parcel map for industrial expansion

CALIFORNIA CITY - The city's planning commission approved this week a parcel map for the breaking up of an 102 acre parcel which was once intended to be the home of a tire recycling plant.
The action removes any question that the United Tire Recycling Facility, intended to occupy land south of California City Blvd. Just west of the railroad tracks, would ever return as a viable industry in the city.
Carl Jones, represented at the commission's meeting by local Realtor Al Gagnon of California City Real Estate, plans to break the acreage up into four parcels and a "remainder parcel." The four units will all front on Cal City Blvd. and be 15, 10, 17.2 and 22 acres. One of the parcels is arranged so as to have sufficient space for a railroad spur and three of the four will have rail access.
The intent of the parcel map, according to the application to the city, is to make it more acceptable for resale. Gagnon did tell the commission, however, that talks were in progress with one prospect that desired to put a lumberyard in the area but no other substantive discussions had yet begun.
In other actions before the commission this week, the board approved in concept the resolution making a zone change which approves the construction of artist's lofts with residences above work space in industrial zoned property.
The commission approved inputs from the Fire Department and Building Department and directed staff to have the city attorney rewrite the resolution and bring it back to the commission at their next meeting for approval and forwarding to city council.
Due to the absence of the building inspector because of illness, the commission put off until their next meeting a review of the city's sign ordinance, which the commission had requested.
