CALIFORNIA CITY — Eight California City residents that work quietly behind the scenes to improve the quality of life in California City were recognized for their efforts by the California City Economic Development Corporation with its annual “Silent Seven” awards last Thursday.
Former California City Mayor Larry Adams, who was installed as the EDC’s new president, presented the awards to the following community volunteers:
CHUCK FLORES of the city’s Parks and Recreation Dept. for his efforts to improve Central Park.
JULIE AND LARRY PHELPS, who serve in a variety of roles with the Optimist Club, Mojave Unified School District, CalCity Forward, and other activities.
LARRY ADAMS, for his years of service to the city as mayor and behind-the-scenes efforts to promote the city and its residents and businesses.
MIKE STRONG, “one of those people you can always go to” to help support community activities,” Adams said.
BOB DACEY, who operates Tierra del Sol golf course and is busy with numerous community activities.
LARRY GRIMSHAW, a local builder and property owner for his work with Youth Rodeo and other eforts.
MARYANN LEBLANC, the EDC’s hard-working manager. Retiring EDC President Jim Quiggle said LeBlanc was “indispensable” during his five years as president.

Al and Katyy Gagnon of California City Real Estate were honored along with Service Rock Company.
