California City special tax committee formed

Volunteers, donations needed

SPECIAL TO THE DESERT NEWS

CALIFORNIA CITY - Community volunteers have formed a committee to support the passage of the Special Tax Measure, which will be on the March 9, 2004 primary election ballot. Co-chaired by Lynda Wilson and Julie Phelps, the other members of the committee includes Mary Edmiston, Vance Mingus, Bud Burnett, Shelley and Oscar Hornback, Candace McCarthy, and Ken and Sharon Fletcher.

Passage of the Special Tax is vital to the continued success of California City. The funds provide two-thirds of the budget for the police and fire department. The city council approved increasing the current Special Tax by $10. Higher operating costs have made the increase necessary.

The California City Citizen's Advisory Committee has provided oversight since reinstatement in 1998. Semi-annually they report on the receipt and use of the funds to the public and city council.

The increase approved by the city council will raise the yearly tax to $85 per parcel. This represents an increase per month to only $0.83. The present monthly charge to our property tax bill is $6.25, which will increase to $7.08 per month (only 2 1/2 cents per day) when the tax is approved.

The committee needs and welcomes volunteers. Donations, either in-kind or monetary, are also welcomed to help promote and advertise the Special Tax Measure. We welcome your questions and comments on the Special Tax. To volunteer please, call Lynda Wilson at 760.373.078 or Julie Phelps at 760.373.3468.
